Rise of the Planet of the Apes, which unwraps this weekend, takes us back to the dawn of a tale that first enthralled audiences with 1968′s Planet of the Apes.

5 more films were made through 1973, and another in 2001. Now, director Rupert Wyatt is rebooting the franchise at the beginning of the apes’ takeover.

Gone are actors in ape suits, replaced by special effects and a captivating performance by Andy Serkis, who portrayed Gollum in the Lord of the Rings films.

Stars James Franco, Freida Pinto and Tom Felton agreed that without having Serkis’ turn as Caesar the chimpanzee, the movie would feel empty.
