It has always been Scarlett Johansson’s wish to direct in a Hollywood movie one day. When she heard about the motion picture “New York, I Love You”, she was ecstatic because of her directing opportunity. However, to her dismay, she learned that the scenes she had shot and directed were now being cut out of the movie.
The movie is a compilation of different short love stories, shot by various directors, including young star Natalie Portman.
The producer of the movie, Emmanuel Benbihy, said that he believed that Johansson’s scene did not flow with the other parts of the movie. Her scenes, starring Kevin Bacon, were the only ones shot in black and white and did not fit in well. Even though Benbihy agreed that Johansson’s part was “extremely compelling”, he also said that it was “unconventional..narrative that appeared as though it would not necessarily conform to the overall approach of the entire collective.”
In the end though, he had to make the final editorial decision to remove her scenes from the movie, “in the interest of serving the overall narrative and composition.”
